ऐश्वर्यस्य विभूषणं सुजनता शौर्यस्य वाक्संयमो

ज्ञानस्योपशम: श्रुतस्य विनयो वित्तस्य पात्रे व्यय:।

अक्रोधस्तपस: क्षमा प्रभवितुर्धर्मस्य निर्व्याजता

सर्वेषामपि सर्वकारणमिदं शीलं परं विभूषणम्।

(नीतिशतके)

સુજનતા (સારી વર્તણુક) એ મહાનતા નું આભૂષણ છે, શૌર્ય નું વાણી પર સંયમ, જ્ઞાન નું શમ (સારું શીખવું), સાંભળવામાં વિનય, પાત્રતા હોય ત્યાં વિત્ત નો વ્યય, તપ નું અક્રોધ, પ્રભાવી નું ક્ષમા, ધર્મ માં પ્રવીણતા, આ બધા ગુણો (આભૂષણો) માં શીલ (સારું ચરિત્ર) એ સૌથી શ્રેષ્ઠ છે. 

Good naturedness (kind behaviour) is the ornament of greatness; silence of valour; restraint over the sense of learning; humility of (Vedic) knowledge; spending (wealth) for the right cause (charity to the worthy); freedom from anger; forgiveness of a man in power; hypocrisy-free religious practices. However, good character, which is the basis of all these qualities, is the best ornament of all.

Aaishvaryasya vibhushanam Sujanata, shauryasya vak sanyamo,

gyansyopashamah shrutasya vinayo, vittasya patre Vyaya |

akrodhastapash kshama prabhavitur dharmasya nirvyajata,

sarveshamapi sarvakaranmidam, sheelam param vibhushanam ||

व्यालं बालमृणालतन्तुभिरसौ रोद्धुं समुज्जृम्भते
छेत्तुं वज्रमणीञ्छिरीषकुसुमप्रान्तेन सन्नह्यते ।
माधुर्यं मधुबिन्दुना रचयितुं क्षाराम्बुधेरीहते
नेतुं वाञ्छति यः खलान्पथि सतां सूक्तैः सुधास्यन्दिभिः॥[6]

 

જેણે મધુર સમજાવટની ભાષ દ્વારા દુષ્ટ મૂર્ખને સદ્ગુણીના  માર્ગમાં દોરવાની ઇચ્છા કરી છે તે તે છે જેણે શિરીષાના ફૂલની ધારથી હીરાને કાપવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરનાર જેવા, કોમળ કમળના તંતુઓ દ્વારા ગાંડા હાથીને કાબૂમાં લેવાનો પ્રયત્ન કર્યો છે. , અથવા જેની જેમ મધની એક ટીપા દ્વારા સમુદ્રના મીઠા પાણીને મીઠાઇ આપવાની આશા છે.

Jatiryatu Rasatalam Gunagunai

जातिर्यातु रसातलं गुणगणैस्तत्राप्यधो गम्यतां

शीलं शैलतटात्पतत्वभिजनः सन्दह्यतां वह्निना ।

शौर्ये वैरिणि वज्रमाशु निपतत्वर्थोऽस्तु नः केवलं

येनैकेन विना गुणास्तृणलवप्रायाः समस्ता इमे ॥ ३९॥

धन के बिना मनुष्य के सारे गुण तिनके के समान हैं 

જો જાત-પાત પાતાળ માં જતા રહે, બધા ગુણો પાતાળ થી પણ નીચે જતા રહે, ચરિત્ર પર્વત પરથી પડીને નષ્ટ થઇ જાય, સ્વજનો અગ્નિ માં બળી જાય, શત્રુમાં શૂરવીરતા ઉપર વજ્રપાત થઇ જાય, તેનો પણ કંઈ વાંધો નહીં। પરંતુ આપણું ધન કોઈપણ રીતે નષ્ટ ન થાય. કારણકે ધન વગર બધા ગુણો તણખલા ની જેમ નકામા છે   

यदि जाति-पांति पाताल में चली जाय, सारे गुण पाताळ से भी नीचे चले जाएं, सुशीलता पर्वत से गिर कर नष्ट भी जाये, स्वजन अग्नि में जल कर भस्म हो जाएं और शत्रुओं से शूरता पर वज्रपात हो जाये - तो कोई हर्ज नहीं, लेकिन हमारा धन नष्ट न हो, हमें तो केवल धन चाहिए, क्योंकि धन के बिना मनुष्य के सारे गुण तिनके की तरह निकम्मे हैं।

Let the jaati (caste, occupation) sink to the nether world. Let all good qualities go down deeper still. Let good conduct fall from the top of a hill. Let all relatives be burnt in a fire. Let valour against the enemy be struck by thunderbolt. Let us have only wealth (money). Without money all good qualities are nothing more than a bundle of grass.

Paapan Nivarayati Yojayate Hitaay

पापान्निवारयति योजयते हिताय

गुह्यं च गूहति गुणान् प्रकटीकरोति ।

आपद्गतं च न जहाति ददाति काले

सन्मित्रलक्षणमिदं प्रवदन्ति सन्तः ॥1.72

1. પાપ માં રોકે છે, 2. હિત માં જોડે છે, 3. ગુપ્ત વાતો ગુપ્ત રાખે છે, 4. ગુણો ને પ્રગટ કરે છે,  5. આપત્તિ સમયે જે છોડતો  નથી, 6. સમય આવે ત્યારે જે જરૂરી હોય તે આપે છે. સાચા મિત્ર ના આ લક્ષણો છે એવું સંતો કહે છે 

जो पाप से रोकता है, हित में जोडता है, गुप्त बात गुप्त रखता है, गुणों को प्रकट करता है, आपत्ति आने पर छोडता नहीं, समय आने पर (जो आवश्यक हो) देता है - संत पुरुष इन्हीं को सन्मित्र के लक्षण कहते हैं ।

Saintly persons say that the mark of a true friend is preventing one from committing sinful actions, 

putting one on the path that will lead to good only, 

keeping one’s secrets, 

bringing out the innate qualities in one, 

not forsaking when one is in trouble 

and giving one whatever is required at the appropriate time.

वाङ्ग्छा सज्जनसङ्गमे परगुणे प्रितिगुरौ नम्रता 

विध्यायांव्यसनं स्वयोषिति रति: लोकार्पवादात् भयम् |

भक्ति: शूलिनी शक्तिरात्मदमने संसर्गमुक्ति: खले 

एते येषु वसन्ति निर्मलगुणास्तेभ्यो नरेभ्यो नमः ||

સજ્જનો ના સાથ ની ઈચ્છા, બીજા ના ગુણોની પ્રશંસા, ગુરુ માટે  નમ્રતા,

વિદ્યા મેળવવાનું વ્યસન, પોતાની પત્ની માં વૈવાહિક આનંદ, લોકો માં વિવાદિત (કૌભાંડી)  થઇ જવાનો ભય । શૂલપાણિ શિવા ની ભક્તિ, સંયમ ની શક્તિ, દુષ્ટલોકો નો સંસર્ગ ટાળવો, જે નર માં આ નિર્મળ ગુનો વસે છે, તે મહાન નર ને મારા વંદન ।।

salutations to those great men in whom reside such sterling qualities as the desire for friendship with the good, appreciation of good qualities in others, humility before the guru, thirst for knowledge, find conjugal pleasure in one’s own wife, fear of scandals about one’s character, devotion to Lord Shiva, power to control one’s mind and avoiding the company of evil men.

Re Re Chataka Saavadhaan Manasa

रे रे चातक! सावधानमनसा मित्र क्षणं श्रूयतां 

अम्भोदा बहवो हि सन्ति गगने सर्वेऽपि नैतद्रशा: |

केचिद्वृष्टिभिरार्द्रयन्ति वसुधां गर्जन्ति केचिद् वृथा 

यं यं पश्यति तस्य तस्य पुरतो मां ब्रुहि दिनं वच ||  

ઓ ચાતક મિત્ર!  હું કહું છું તે શાંતિથી સાંભળ, આકાશ માં ઘણા બધા વાદળો છે, પણ બધા સરખા હોતા નથી.। એમાંના કેટલાક પૃથ્વી પર બઉ વરસાદ વરસાવે છે, અને કેટલાક ખાલી અવાજ કરે છે. તેથી જળબિંદુ માટે બધા વાદળો આગળ ભીખ માંગીશ નહીં।।

Yam yam pashyasi tasya tasya purato maa broohi deenam vachah 

O Friend chaataka! Listen carefully to what I am saying. There are so many clouds in the sky but

all of them are not of the same character. Some of them drench the earth with precious rain.

Some others do nothing but thundering. They do not yield a drop of water. Therefore do not beg

for water before every cloud you seen in the sky.

Note: The legendary bird Chataka is supposed to quench its thirst only from water from the

clouds. Here clouds are the kings. And the Chataka birds are those who want to make a living by

serving the king. Here is advice to such persons that they should not approach all and sundry.

Only a few kings are generous, others only boast of themselves but are stingy.

Prarabhyate Na Khalu Vidhna Bhayen

प्रारभ्यते न खलु विघ्नभयेन नीचैः

प्रारभ्य विघ्नविहता विरमन्ति मध्याः ।

विघ्नैः पुनः पुनरपि प्रतिहन्यमानाः

प्रारब्धमुत्तमजना न परित्यजन्ति ||

उत्तम मनुष्य किसी कार्य को अधूरा नहीं छोड़ते

નબળા વિચારશીલ લોકો મુશ્કેલીઓના ડરથી કંઇપણ શરૂ કરતા નથી, સામાન્ય લોકો કોઈ કામ શરૂ કરે છે પરંતુ તેનો માર્ગ છોડી દે છે તેટલું જલ્દી અવરોધ આવે છે, પરંતુ મુશ્કેલીઓ દ્વારા વારંવાર અવરોધાયેલી વ્યક્તિ તેમ છતાં જે શરૂ કરી દીધી છે તે છોડતી નથી.

इस संसार में नीच, मध्यम और उत्तम ये तीन प्रकार के मनुष्य होते हैं; जिनमे से नीच प्रकार के मनुष्य तो आने वाली विध्न-बाधाओं के डर मात्र से ही किसी कार्य की शुरुआत नहीं करते; और मध्यम प्रकार के मनुष्य कार्य की शुरुआत तो करते हैं लेकिन छोटी-छोटी परेशानियों के आते ही काम को अधूरा छोड़ देते हैं; परन्तु उत्तम मनुष्य

ऐसे धैर्यवान होते हैं जो बार-बार विपत्तियों के घेर लेने पर भी अपने हाथ में लिए गए काम सम्पूर्ण किये बिना कदापि नहीं छोड़ते।
